Within this section, you’ll see references to proven methodologies such as Agile and Design Thinking, but learning these specific methods is not the goal. Instead, I want to give you the principles and core ingredients needed to craft your own organization’s approach to digital transformation, using the components that have been proven by countless successful transformation stories.
At a glance: How to Iterate
Who? The transformation leadership group and self-directing project teams that are staffed based on the needs of the project with the right blend of skill sets to build, test, and learn in iterative cycles.
Why? To prevent the organization from completing a project customers don’t want or need and to enable truly innovative solutions that have the power to transform the business.
What? Run many iterative projects and evaluate their progress against predefined goals so decisions can be made quickly and based on measurable and observable evidence.
How? Projects use a blend of Agile and Design Thinking methods to engage customers, creatively solve problems, spot opportunities, and test and improve solutions as they increase in scale and complexity.
You can’t tell people what the gaps are. If you sit across from someone and say ‘I’ve got a whole list of examples of how we could do things better’, it’s really hard to influence that person.
My one approach out of all the learnings of what failed for us and what succeeded, is you show not tell. For example, I was trying to convince people internally that we could save more money. When you get in a room though and one person is talking about one solution and the other person wants another, how do you prove who’s right? You can’t, you just end up in an argument. The only way to do it to show your solution.
